Opportunity Scholarship Program
To apply for the Opportunity Scholarship for the first time, complete an Opportunity Scholarship New Student Application. Students who have not received an Opportunity Scholarship are new students, even if a sibling is already an Opportunity Scholarship recipient.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program expands school choice in North Carolina through scholarship grants for eligible children in kindergarten through 12th grade. This program provides funding of up to $4,200 per year for eligible children who choose to attend a participating nonpublic school.
The ongoing legal challenge to the Opportunity Scholarship program has been resolved as of July 23, 2015. The North Carolina Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the Opportunity Scholarship Program. The State Education Assistance Authority will send funds to the nonpublic schools enrolling scholarship recipients.
All eligible applicants who apply after March 1st are placed on a waiting list because current funding is exhausted. An applicant's position on the waiting list is determined as follows: applicants who applied prior to March 1st are placed on the list based on their lottery number. Applicants who apply after March 1st are placed on the waiting list in the order their applications are received.
